Realising Retail Potential

Case Study – Temptashuns Gifts at Newlands Shopping Centre

In 2010, after 22 years in retail, distribution and logistics; Cerys Lawrence decided to take her valuable experience and branch out on her own. Having worked with high profile brands such as Game, Marks and Spencer and The White Company she had a solid base of knowledge and just needed to find a niche in the market to start.

Back in 2010 Silver 925 and Tibetan jewellery was inexpensive to import from China and Cerys spent four years selling her jewellery at fayres and festivals.

By 2015 she decided to expand her range to include Italian fashion wear, accessories and perfumes.  At the time there was no other sole trader providing Italian fashion clothing in her local area and she found that there was a big market for this, especially popular during the summer months.

Cerys understands that to succeed in retail she needs to listen to what her customers want and takes personal orders and helps her customers where she can. Her range has grown extensively and now includes clothing, jewellery, leather accessories, homeware, candles and other fragranced products for the home and the body.

Cery’s told us, ‘I started as a fayre sole trader and as my knowledge rapidly grew, I realised that I wanted to become an established retailer in one place, rather than be known as a market trader.  The two forms of retailing are very different.’

She continued, ‘I chose to rent mall space at Newlands Shopping Centre as it’s is local to home and I liked the package that Space to trade offer. Not many commercialisation agencies support their traders like Space to trade to.  I know that I can always speak to my dedicated account manager Michelle Clark and that any questions or help that I need is to hand.  They also help promote their traders with marketing and advertising.  And the pricing is very reasonable too giving traders the space to grow their business. ’

Cerys concluded by saying, ‘in time I would like a shop unit, but at the moment I need to become established in one place and grow my customer base.  With a shop you have to wait for the public to walk in, but with an RMU customers are walking by your and seeing products all the time. I can honestly say that I love my business and would recommend anyone wishing to take the leap into setting up their own retail business to start with mall space.’
