Case Study: Scots Corner.

Retail Kiosk at Oak Mall Shopping Centre

BACKGROUND.

In 1989 the city of Glasgow was welcoming millions of tourists from all over the world. 18-year-old Steven Watson fresh out of college, was dreaming of owning his own business. To get his foot in the door, he signed up to a government run Enterprise Allowance Scheme where he was receiving £30 per week in government funding.

The perfect opportunity arose, and Steven decided to exhibit his business at a well-known festival and before he knew it, his career in retail was underway.

VENUE.

Oak Mall Shopping Centre has an average footfall of 70,000 per week.

Anchor stores include Wilko, Primark, New Look and Topshop.

AIMS.

When the tourist boom struck in Scotland back in 1989, Steven wanted to take advantage of this, so he launched Scots Corner, a kiosk selling Scottish themed products to tourists.

Steven’s main aim was to start trading in a shopping centre, which he accomplished when he began trading at Oak Mall Shopping Centre as part of the monthly market.

However, not everything was plain sailing and the monthly market was cancelled without notice.

Space to Trade contacted a number of effected retailers, Steven was one of them. This is when his relationship with Space to Trade began and he has never looked back.

PROMOTION.

Steven was appointed Lynn Carmichael as his main point of contact for Space to Trade. He initially wanted to trial a space on the mall for a weekend which turned into a week and then a month.

In December 2016 he signed a contract to lease space at Oak Mall until the end of December 2017.

Lynn saw that Steven’s display was not at its full potential and needed some work! Utilising Lynn’s vast knowledge of the retail industry, Steven transformed his visual merchandising and kiosk design. This included bringing in new units that displayed his products better and add value to the items he was selling.

RESULT.

After originally signing up for a year contract with Space to Trade, 2 years later of growing his business on the mall, he has now successfully moved into a shop unit.

It has been so rewarding to be a part of Steven’s journey, seeing him grow and develop. We are so pleased to have helped him realise and reach his full potential.
